b. Design
(1) The floor of the platform shall be steel plate with a non-skid
surface. The platform shall have a guard rail, midrail, and kickplate around
its upper periphery. The guardrail shall be at least 39 inches high and the
kickplate shall be at least 4 inches high.
(2) The front and rear of the platform shall have access points. At
the access openings, chains may be substituted for the guardrail and midrail,
and the kickplate may be omitted.
(3) Means shall be provided for ascending the platform, If access
ladders are provided as part of the platform, they shall be retractable.
(4) The front of the platform shall have two tie-down points for
safety lanyards. The tie-downs shall withstand a 1500-pound dynamic shock
load.
(5) The platform forward surfaces shall have wear-resistant bumpers
to prevent damage when contacting an aircraft.
(6) A spotlight, adjustable through 360 degrees horizontally and ±60
degrees from the horizontal, shall be located at each corner of the platform.
(7) The base shall have four tie-down points. The tie-down points
shall withstand the stress of air shipment, including the following loads; 3.0g
fore and aft, 2.0g up, 4.5g down, and 1.5g laterally.
(8)- The stand shall have a drawbar ring capable of towing the stand
up to 15 mph. The drawbar ring shall be formed of material with a diameter of
1-5/8 ±1/32 inch. The opening of the ring shall be 3 ±1/32 inch.
(9) The stand shall be equipped with both hydraulic brakes and a
mechanical parking brake that will hold the stand, without load, on a 17-degree
slope.
(10) The stand shall have pneumatic tires selected from the Tire and
Rim Association Yearbook.
(11) The stand shall use hydraulic fluid in accordance with
MIL-H-5606.
c. Function
(1) The platform shall have a sensing device to stop the motion of
the stand when contact is made with an aircraft, The maximum force required to
actuate the sensor shall be 10 pounds.
(2) Movement stabilizers shall be mounted on the base and shall be
controlled from the platform. The stand shall be capable of speeds up to 0.8
mph with the platform elevated and the stabilizers extended.
(3) Operating controls shall be provided on the platform. The
control boxes shall be weatherproof and illuminated with non-glare lighting.
All controls, handles, et cetera shall be operable by personnel wearing heavy
gloves, mittens, and bulky clothing or chemical defense ensembles.
